French real estate purchase: The Importance of the Final Visit
When you are buying a French property you may hear your notary advising you to check out the property one more time on the day of the final signing to make sure you know the condition of the property before the final signing.
You may wonder why?
It could be months since you last visited the property and now it is most likely empty from all the prior owners items, at least you hope all the prior owners items are out of the home and things may have changed.
For example, I bought a French property and when I visited the village home on the day of the final signing and visited the kitchen all the cupboards were gone! Yes, the owner had removed all of them. They were supposed to be left behind but for some reason she took them with her. The good news is that that cupboards were actually very old, I had photos plus my memory and we were going to replace them. So at least I knew before the signing they were gone because if we needed them or wanted them I would have wanted to know before the signing things had changed.
Avoid surprises and follow your notary’s advice and make sure you visit the property you are buying on the day your are signing the final agreement.
