During the sale of a French property you may see in the compromis de vente the title of a section ‘Depot de Garantie’.
‘Depot de Garantie’ is generally speaking the original deposit that the buyer pays to the French notary to keep for the buyer as part of their payment for the French real estate transaction. This amount is typically paid on the day of the signing of the compromis de vente.
Depending on what happens during the process of the sale this amount may become part of the purchase price of the property or payment to seller for reasons you need to speak to an English speaking French lawyer or notary about.
