French real estate: What is a restanque?

French real estate terminology offers some terms that are similar in English like W.C. (toilet), however, one reader asked us what does the term ‘restanque’ mean and this is not a term that has a similar English word. 

A Restanque is a terraced piece of land, that is the land has a step like effect to it. Usually the vertical part of the restanque is supported by some kind of stones.

What is a lavabo or lave mains in a French real estate ad?

A lavabo or lave mains in a French real estate ad is most likely referring to the little sink you will find in the WC or toilet room in a French apartment or house.  Not all WC or toilet rooms in French properties contain a lavabo or lave mains so it is a nice feature to see advertised and present in the property you buy.

If you are curious the word ‘robinet’ refers to the tap on the lavobo or lave mains.
