What is the Clause Penale in a French real estate contract or compromis?

During the sale of a French property you may read in the compromis de vente the title of a section ‘Clause Penale’.

The ‘Clause Penale’ refers to the amount of money the buyer may have to pay the seller as a penalty under certain conditions when a sale is not completed.
