What does séjour and salon mean in a French real estate advertisement?

In French real estate advertisements we sometimes see both these terms used to mean the same thing.

A salle de séjour is typically what we call a living room in English, the place we welcome guests or go to sit and relax.

The term salon in French real estate advertisements also appears to be used to describe the same kind of living area but can also be defined as a  lounge.

In general, it appear the séjour or salon is the main living room close by the kitchen.

What does the French term procuration mean in real estate?

If you hear a French owner saying they have a ‘procuration’ so they can sell the real estate you are visiting they are referring to a special document.

A ‘Procuration’ is a special document that is often called in English ‘ a power of attorney’ which give power to a person to sign documents on behalf of another. However, the power given to the person is detailed in the document and only the power given can be used. So be cautious.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you speak with an English speaking French notary and have him or her review the procuration the person showed you to make sure he or she has the right to review and accept offers from you so you don’t waste your time.

What does rangement mean in a French real estate ad?

In a French real estate advertisement you may read the term rangement or beaucoup de rangement and this will be good news.

The term beaucoup de rangement means there is lots of storage, the term rangement in general means storage.

A French property without a lot of storage is often harder to sell so make sure you invest in one that has lots of rangement.

What does the French term parquet mean in a real estate ad?

In a French real estate advertisement the French word ‘parquet’ is typically referring to a wooden floor in a house or apartment. It does not mean the type of wood floor and it could also be referring to a floor that is not made of solid wood. You will need to check.

This is in contrast to the very popular type of floor called ‘Carrelage’ found in many French homes. Read what Carrelage means here.

What does the French word Toit or Toiture mean in a real estate ad?

If you see the word ‘toit’ or ‘toiture’ in a French real estate advertisement they are referring to the roof. In fact, ‘toit’ means ‘roof’ and ‘toiture’ means ‘roofing’. Both words refer to the outside roof of a building.

If you are referring to the ceiling inside an apartment or house the word typically used is ‘plafond’.
