French Real Estate Not Adapted for Elderly People

Currently French real estate is not adapted to its aging population. Approximately, only six percent of French properties are adapted to the needs of people over the age of 65 according to a report presented this week to the French Minster of Housing and the French Minster of the Elderly.

This percentage of French property is lower than the European average. French property is less adapted than German (nearly 8 percent adapted) , Danish (12 percent adapted) and Dutch (16 percent adapted.)

This means as French people get old they will potentially lose a sense of freedom and mobility.

According to INSEE the population of French people older than 60 years old today is 15 million, predicted to rise to 20 million by 2030.

What is a studette in a French real estate ad?

A Studette is a small French apartment. Typically, it is a small studio apartment that may be part of a house.

It may also be called a chambre de bonne, depending on the facilities included with the apartment. In fact, sometimes a chambre de bonne is advertised as a studette.

The key is to ask the seller what facilities are included in the apartment, for example, is there a kitchen? is there a bathroom? is there a toilet?

In French Real Estate, what does the organization SAFER mean or do in France?

In French real estate the acronym SAFER is for Les Sociétés d’Aménagement Foncier et d’Etablissement Rural. SAFER is an organization created in France by the Farm Bill of 1960.

When you are going to buy or sell agricultural land in France it is most likely that the sale will be reviewed by SAFER as they have the right of first refusal on the sale. The reason they have this right is intended to protect the economic and environmental value of agricultural land in France.

If you have more questions and you read French you can visit the site on SAFER
