The purchase of a French real estate property requires the payment of the French notary’s fees. How much are the notary fees is an important question? This year (2014) the fees when up.

If is best to confirm with a French notary the exact amount that it will cost you but in general expect to pay up to 8 percent of the purchase price of a French property (in addition to the purchase price) when you buy a previously owned apartment or house.

Expect to pay between 2 and 3 percent of the purchase price of a French property (in addition to the purchase price) when you buy a new apartment or house.

What does Bastide mean in a French real estate advertisement?

In French real estate a Bastide is a term used for a manor house in the south of France. A Bastide is typically larger and more elegant than a Mas (defined here). Historically, Bastide’s were occupied by wealthy French Farmers.

A Bastide can be square in design with a tile roof and may be built around an inner courtyard.

The OECD better life index studies this question and offers a ranking of satisfactory housing conditions for 36 countries in the world.

To live in satisfactory housing conditions is one of the most important aspects of people’s lives. We all need shelter but we also need security. Security is a key feature for most people.

Of the OECD study 87 percent of the people feel satisfied and safe in their housing conditions with some countries offer a 93 percent satisfaction rate.
