Do I pay the French property owner the deposit directly?

When you are buying a French property we have been told by French notaries to never pay the deposit to the owner.

The deposit which is often 10 percent of the purchase price is typically paid into a special account at the French notary’s office.

Ask you English speaking French notary for more details as to why you need to avoid paying the deposit direct to the property owner.
